Milk and Bookies for March is Reading

A “Milk and Bookies” party is a book-raiser party when we come together and have milk and cookies and spread a love of reading with those who might not be able to afford books on their own. Milk and Bookies teaches kids the importance of giving, and instills in them self-confidence, pride, and a sense of goodwill. At Dolsen, we believe in the importance of “taking care of others!”

For March is Reading month, we asked our students to bring a new picture book (hardcover or softcover) appropriate for a preschool age child. The book did not need to be expensive. We encouraged families to shop together and let their student pick out the book. At the party, they inscribed the book with a kind note. The Helping Hands Club, Kind Kids Club, and 5 classroom teachers hosted Milk and Bookies parties with over 200 students being involved in the book-raiser. We raised over 200 books! Books were then be donated to “at risk” youth in our own community, as well as through the Safehouse Center in Ann Arbor.

What better way to celebrate March is Reading month than through the gift of books!?!

Our mission is simple - reach out with helping hands to "take care of others." Read below for more information on the Helping Hands Club as a component of our "Taking Care Initiative."

Dolsen Elementary strives to teach students how to "take care of themselves, each other, and the world" through character education and service projects. We are committed to developing the whole-child by immersing each student in experiences that develop empathetic individuals who are positive and contributing members of society. Through our Taking Care Initiative founded in 2012, teachers across the building read aloud pictures books every week with strong character education messages that model kindness, empathy, compassion, persistence, etc. for our students. Our Taking Care book collection now consists of over 175 books that teachers can share and use to help lead discussions in their classroom. In addition, our Dolsen Helping Hands Club sponsors school-wide monthly service projects that raise money for those in need. Example past projects include raising money for pediatric cancer through Alex's Lemonade Stand and a Sock-it-to-Cancer event, for children with facial differences through Children's Craniofacial Association and many more. Lastly, our Kind Kids Club meets monthly to help the younger students learn about kindness and developing empathy for others. We believe in educating the “whole-child” and teaching our students not only academic content and cognitive skills, but skills that support their social and emotional development.
